As an environmental anthropologist, I study social relations between coastal communities, climate, and marine life. Through collaborative ethnographic research, I work toward locally-generated and sustainable strategies for the conservation of biocultural diversity, climate change resilience, and the realization of indigenous sovereignty. This work has been funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Columbia University’s Department of Anthropology and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and The Explorer’s Club (FN 2015).
As a US Coast Guard-licensed captain and Program Director at Brooklyn Boatworks, I introduce students of all ages to the maritime world through unique experiences on classic boats and advocate equitable opportunities on the waterfront.
